Tips on A College Sight-Seeing!

DISCLAIMER: First off, let me tell you that this post is going to be biased, because I will be showing you some pictures from my college, Catawba College.  I encourage you to read this blog post, but not only go see Catawba College just because of the pictures that I took on a sunny Spring morning.

With some of you parents having students leaving high school and going to college, there are always questions that you need to know that hardly never get asked.

Questions that should be asked are the following:

1. What is the professor/student ratio?

2. What are some of the fun things to do around campus?

3. Are Freshmen allowed to have cars on campus?

4. When do the Financial Aid packets come out?

5. How much does tuition cost?

6. How secure is this campus?

7. Are the professors nice?  Are they willing to help out each of their students?

8. If there is a problem with the students in their dormitories, is the Director of Housing willing to work with not just one, but both students?

These are just some things that I encourage you to ask.

Also,if a college has an Open House, PLEASE go to it.  This is the time when you get to meet other students and parents that are able to help you out, or you can ask anyone that is working it, because I'm sure they are willing to assist you with things that you need.

Make sure that you check out all of the scholarship websites that are out there (ex. www.fastweb.com, www.scholarship.com) and they will be able to get you a scholarship for what you are able to do.  Not only that, ask the college to see if they have any special scholarships that your son or daughter could apply for.  Every penny counts now-a-days.

Lastly, take advantage of this time with the people that are working for the college.  There are plenty of things that you can talk about and things that they are willing to tell you without you even asking.  Make sure that you take a pad and pen (to write stuff down about the college), along with a camera.  The camera will help you figure out what the college looks like, in case you are looking at more than one college.

Also, even if your child is stuck on one specific college, try to get them to go see another college.  Even if they don't want to, ask them, "What will it hurt?"

So, go to a college with your questions down on a piece of paper and get them answered.

Until next time, be safe and have fun.

  1. Love this school...*wink*! Haha great questions! i Especially like that you were telling people to ask, "Can a freshman have a car on campus?" because that's sometimes a deciding factor! Very good. Thanks for sharing about our wonderful school!
